Statement From Lt.-Gov. Anita R. Neville on the Passing of Murray Sinclair

November 4, 2024

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing earlier today of the Honourable Murray Sinclair (Mizhana Gheezhik – the One Who Speaks of Pictures in the Sky). As Manitoba’s first Indigenous judge and the second in Canada, Senator Sinclair lived a life dedicated to public service. An Anishinaabe leader in the justice system, he was passionate about his role and his responsibility to Indigenous people and the community at large. In chairing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Senator Sinclair spearheaded the final report documenting the stories and legacies of survivors of Canada’s Indian residential schools. The 94 calls to action contained within the report have become a road map for Canada on proceeding toward reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. A true visionary leader and a man for all people, the impact of his work will continue to create positive change that will resonate throughout Canada and the world for generations to come. He was pure of heart, an inspiration, a trusted friend.  My sincere condolences to his family and the countless others whose lives he touched. May we all honour his memory and legacy by continuing to walk together on the path to reconciliation.

“Building the Invisible: A History of Public Infrastructure in Manitoba” with Dr. Gordon Goldsborough

October 30, 2024

Next Presentation in the Lieutenant-Governor’s Evenings at Government House Series of Free Public Events Lt.-Gov. Anita R. Neville invites Manitobans to attend the next presentation in a series of free public events designed to welcome Manitobans into Government House and showcase outstanding and inspiring Manitobans who, through words and deeds, continually work to make the province better for all. The November event features Dr. Gordon Goldsborough, the head researcher and webmaster of the Manitoba Historical Society. In this presentation, Dr. Goldsborough will examine some of the public systems on which we depend and how those systems have developed over the past 150 years. It is a maxim among architects, engineers, and other designers that their work is best appreciated when it is invisible, when users of the work only notice when their attention is drawn to it. Public infrastructure like roads, electrical networks, and sewage treatment are good examples. We only notice them when they don’t work, yet they are fundamentally important to our daily life. The event will be held Wednesday, Nov. 13 at Government House. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Program begins at 7 p.m. Parking is available on both sides of the Government House driveway. Light refreshments to follow. Those wishing to attend must register in advance with the Office of the Lieutenant Governor by calling 204-945-2753. Lieutenant-Governor to Receive First Poppy of Annual Legion Campaign

October 17, 2024

At 10 a.m. tomorrow, Lt.-Gov. Anita R. Neville will be presented with the first poppy of this year’s annual Royal Canadian Legion fundraiser at Government House, 10 Kennedy St. by Comrade Ernie Tester, president, Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Command. “Wearing the poppy demonstrates our understanding of Canada’s national debt of gratitude owed to all veterans,” Lt.-Gov. Neville said.  “It will be my honour to accept and wear the campaign’s first poppy as a reminder to never forget the sacrifices so many have made for us.” The presentation to the lieutenant-governor will set the stage in Manitoba for the poppy campaign to get underway officially. The legion’s poppy campaign always begins on the last Friday of October and the poppy blossoms on the lapels and collars of more than 19 million Canadians. The poppy is distributed by the legion’s branches and the monies collected go into branch poppy trust funds. These funds can only be used under strict guidelines set up by the Poppy and Remembrance Committee of Dominion Command to improve life for people in the communities where the money is raised. The poppies are intended to honour the more than 117,000 Canadians who have died in the service of their country throughout the world. Since 1921, the poppy has stood as the symbol of remembrance, a visual pledge to never forget those Canadians who have fallen in war and military support operations. The poppy also stands internationally as a ‘symbol of collective reminiscence,’ as other countries have also adopted its image to honour those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.   For more information, contact: Kate Gameiro, 204-945-2752

Statement From the Honourable Anita R. Neville, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba on the Passing of Grand Chief Cathy Merrick

September 7, 2024

I am shocked and heartbroken to learn of the sudden and untimely passing of Assembly of Manitoba First Nation Grand Chief Cathy Merrick. As the first woman to be elected as grand chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, she was an inspiration to women and girls, her community, and the greater community throughout our province and beyond. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with and learn from Grand Chief Merrick over the years. She was passionate about her role and responsibility to all First Nations across Manitoba. Thoughtful, firm and decisive in her decision-making, she was also open, collaborative, and had a genuine warmth and desire to bring people together. She was a true leader, and a changemaker. Not only was Cathy a respected leader, but she was also a force, she was a friend and I will miss her. My sincere condolences to those she loved and those who loved her. May we honour her memory by continuing her life’s work – her vision of a fair and just society for all

Message from His Majesty The King for the Commonwealth Day Service of Celebration

March 11, 2024

The seventy-fifth anniversary of The Commonwealth is a moment to reflect on the remarkable journey that our unique family of free and independent nations has made since 1949. Last year, The Bahamas celebrated its fiftieth anniversary of Independence, as Grenada has this year, and Papua New Guinea will next year.  Each of these milestones – and many others like them – represent the fulfilment of countless aspirations and the achievement of such remarkable potential.  And the Commonwealth’s growth, with new members continuing to join our family of nations, demonstrates clearly that whilst we may not all have a shared history, we have common ambitions for a better future – working together to build resilience and respond to global challenges. The Commonwealth family is strongest when we are connected, through friendship.  As I have said before, the Commonwealth is like the wiring of a house, and its people, our energy and our ideas are the current that runs through those wires.  Together and individually, we are strengthened by sharing perspectives and experiences, and by offering and borrowing the myriad ways we have each tackled the challenges of our time.  This is true both at the level of nations and, indeed, at the local level. We recognize today that our diversity is our greatest strength.  The Commonwealth represents a third of humanity, from all regions of the world, with all the different experiences, knowledge and aspirations that this brings.   Wherever we live, we are united by the many challenges we face – whether it be climate change, the loss of Nature, or the social and economic changes that new technologies are bringing.  Our diversity means that these challenges affect us all differently and that we experience their impacts in different ways.  Their seriousness, however, is common to each one of us. All of this means that we must work together to understand each other’s perspectives, including the inequalities and injustices which still resonate to this day.  We must find ways of healing, and to support each other to pursue solutions.  I cannot say often enough that it is by coming together that we create the best chances to improve our world and the lives of people everywhere.  Indeed, over the years countless people across the Commonwealth have been inspired to form their own Commonwealth Associations, from lawyers and accountants, to business and trade networks, and many more besides.  The work they do is absolutely vital, sharing professional knowledge, experience and expertise across the Continents for the betterment of each one of us. The Commonwealth, above all, retains a particular focus on our young people, who make up two-thirds of the entire Commonwealth population. Whether in Kenya or Malaysia, Vanuatu or Dominica, Malta or Canada, I never cease to be impressed by their creativity, innovative skills and hard work, often in the most challenging circumstances. Their energy is transforming approaches to development, technology and preserving and restoring Nature and will, I hope, help to shape and safeguard our common future. Having recently celebrated my own seventy-fifth birthday, it warms my heart to reflect on the way the Commonwealth has been a constant throughout my own life – a precious source of strength, inspiration and pride.  In recent weeks, I have been most deeply touched by your wonderfully kind and thoughtful good wishes for my health and, in return, can only continue to serve you, to the best of my ability, throughout the Commonwealth. My belief in our shared endeavours and in the potential of our people remains as sure and strong as it has ever been.  I have no doubt that we will continue to support one another across the Commonwealth as, together, we continue this vital journey.

Lieutenant-Governor Requests Nominations For Annual Historical Award

January 11, 2024

Lt.-Gov. Anita R. Neville is encouraging the public to nominate worthy Manitobans who have provided prolonged and meritorious service in the preservation and promotion of Manitoba history for an award, presented in consultation with the Manitoba Historical Society (MHS). “I am pleased to continue this award started in 2011 to recognize community-minded individuals who devote their time and expertise to preserving documents, creating historical studies, restoring or maintaining historical buildings and artifacts, bringing the past to life in schools, museums and historic sites, and advocating for historical understanding,” said Neville. “I encourage you to nominate an outstanding volunteer in your community, for the role they play in ensuring the memory of the community remains intact for future generations.” The Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Historical Preservation and Promotion are presented to those with experience in such endeavours as: writing of historical publications and documents; stewardship of museums and archives; raising of public education, advocacy and awareness; committee or community service; preservation of historic sites/buildings; and art and media. As the oldest historical organization in Western Canada, founded in 1879, the MHS presents awards to businesses, farms and organizations that have operated for over 100 years, and recognizes important historical books with its annual Margaret McWilliams Awards. Lieutenant-Governor to Receive First Poppy of Annual Legion Campaign

October 25, 2023

At 1 p.m. tomorrow, Lt.-Gov. Anita R. Neville will be presented with the first poppy of this year’s annual Royal Canadian Legion fundraiser at Government House, 10 Kennedy St. by Comrade Ernie Tester, president, Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Command. “Wearing the poppy demonstrates our understanding of Canada’s national debt of gratitude owed to all veterans,” said Neville. “It will be my absolute honour to accept and wear the campaign’s first poppy and I invite all Manitobans to join me in honouring the sacrifices so many have made for our freedom.” The presentation to the lieutenant-governor will set the stage in Manitoba for the poppy campaign to get underway officially the following day. A Message from the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

July 1, 2023

A time for unity, and celebration, Canada Day inspires citizens from coast to coast to coast to gather, in collective national pride, as we mark the anniversary of 156th anniversary of Confederation. Together, we celebrate Canada – a vibrant nation of majestic beauty revered for its rich multicultural mosaic and democratic social values. The Canadian flag, with its iconic maple leaf, has long been recognized around the world as a symbol of peace, freedom, acceptance and dignity. Today, in communities large and small across the country, our flag will be central to a shared celebratory spirit of the greatness and very promising future it represents. While we celebrate how far we have come as a nation, we must also acknowledge the truths of the past that were extremely harmful to Indigenous people, and the pain that remains. As Canadians we must all commit to listening and learning, and working together to ensure that all citizens have equal opportunity to succeed and thrive in this land we call home. Whether you are Canadian by birth or by choice, now more than ever, we must focus on what unites us all, as we go forward.  On this Canada Day, and every day, I encourage everyone to take time for reflection and gratitude, to better appreciate where we have been and where we are going, as we continue to work together to build a better future for all. The Honourable Anita R. Neville, P.C., O.M. Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

A Message from The Honourable Anita R. Neville, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

May 8, 2023

On behalf of all Manitobans, it is my honour and privilege to extend congratulations to His Royal Highness King Charles III and Queen Camilla, on this Coronation day – a historical milestone for the British monarchy, the Commonwealth and, indeed, world history. This monumental day ushers in a new era of leadership as His Majesty formally assumes his considerable royal responsibilities and the commitment to service that was so capably and wonderfully demonstrated throughout the remarkable reign of his mother, Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. While King Charles III automatically became King of Canada upon the passing of his beloved Mother, holding all legal, constitutional and symbolic authorities as Canada’s Head of State, the Coronation provides a celebratory occasion to mark the new reign and focus on the opportunities ahead. As the heir to the throne, His Majesty has already experienced extraordinary mentorship and training for his new role. With the support of Queen Camilla, he is bound to establish his own unique legacy through his service ethic, intelligence, compassion and ongoing dedication to important topics in the fields of art, technology, architecture and environmentalism. Earlier this week King Charles met with First Nations, Inuit and Metis representatives together. This is the first time a British monarch has done so.  I share in the spirit of optimism that surrounds this new chapter in the relationship between the Crown and Indigenous peoples. I hope all Manitobans will join me in recognizing and reflecting on the significance of this ceremonial day and join me in extending hearty congratulations and loyalty to His Royal Highness King Charles III. LONG LIVE THE KING – 30 – For more information, contact: Kate Gameiro, 204-945-2752

Lieutenant Governor Requests Nominations For Annual Historical Award

January 16, 2023

Lt.-Gov. Anita R. Neville is encouraging the public to nominate worthy Manitobans who have provided prolonged and meritorious service in the preservation and promotion of Manitoba history for an award, presented in consultation with the Manitoba Historical Society. “Since 2011, this award has formally recognized Manitobans who have spent countless hours preserving and promoting the history of this great province for the benefit of us all,” said Neville. “I encourage you to recognize an outstanding volunteer in your community by nominating them for this award.” The Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Historical Preservation and Promotion are presented to those with experience in such endeavours as: writing of historical publications and documents; stewardship of museums and archives; raising of public education, advocacy and awareness; committee or community service; preservation of historic sites/buildings; and art and media. As the oldest historical organization in Western Canada, founded in 1879, the Manitoba Historical Society (MHS) presents awards to businesses, farms and organizations that have operated for over 100 years, and recognizes important historical books with its annual Margaret McWilliams Awards. It publishes the journal Prairie History and operates a comprehensive website of historical information. The MHS will receive nominations from the public and will recommend up to five individuals to receive awards this year. Two awards will be reserved for emerging historians (mid-30s and younger). Paid professionals in the field of history and heritage will not be considered. Nominations for 2023 must be received by Friday, March 3. The awards will be presented at Government House later in the spring. Nomination forms and further details of the award program are available on the websites of the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba (www.manitobalg.ca) and the Manitoba Historical Society (www.mhs.mb.ca).
